The Columbia River Indian's word for the Columbia River was Nch'I-Wana, meaning the big river. The Columbia or Sinkiuse-Columbia. were so called because of their former prominent association with the Columbia River, where some of the most important bands had their homes.

This story is told by the Chelan Indians, who lived beside a long lake in the central part of the state of Washington. The lake is called Lake Chelan (pronounced sha- lan), meaning "deep water."
